Saturday 15th October 2011

The weather this autumn has been remarkable so it will be no surprise to anybody in the UK to know that our 2011 festival on October 15th was blessed with a wonderful sunny day to honour the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible using a special Southwell version of the RSCM celebratory Festival Service The Word Revealed. This special edition had been put together by Paul Hale, Rector Chori of the Minster and David Butterworth a member of our committee. As in previous years we had a rehearsal at St. Michael’s Bramcote earlier in the month, but this year taken by George Richford, Master of the Music at St. Mary Magdalene Newark, in the absence of Paul Hale.

A total of 207 singers assembled in the Great Hall at 2.30 for a proces¬≠sional practice before the ‘finishing touches’ practice prior to the service at 5.45. Getting everybody into the Minster in the right order is always one of our goals so a few minutes spent in rehearsing the procession in and out was well worth it before getting down to singing.

The Gideons, well known for their distribution of bibles in hotel bedrooms, made a contribution by having a bible presented to the Minster by one of their representatives at a ceremony during the service. This was very appropriate bearing in mind the service theme.

As is our custom at Southwell we included in the service our presentation of Bishop’s and Dean’s Awards:

Elizabeth Rudin, St Leonard, Wollaton
Elizabeth Noble, St Leonard, Wollaton

On behalf of the RSCM Area Committee I would like to thank the Dean, the Precentor and the Minster Vergers for all their help and suggestions during, what has come to be, our flagship event. In addition thanks are due to RSCM HQ and their staff for cooperating so well in the production of our festival service book which choirs are able to take back to their churches for use during this year, and I am reliably informed it has already happened.
